What They Said: ‘Well Done, Election Commission’

The elections in four Indian states and a union territory concluded with the last phase of elections in West Bengal on Tuesday. Results will be out on Friday. While we await the results, here is a sample of editorials and opinion pieces from Indian newspapers and Web sites on how the elections were conducted.

In an editorial Thursday, The Times of India commended the Election Commission for peaceful and orderly elections in Assam, Kerala, Puducherry, Tamil Nadu and West Bengal.

"Conducting polls in trouble-prone states like West Bengal and Assam was expected to be challenging. Bengal in particular has a bad reputation for political violence. Months preceding the elections had seen clashes between Trinamool Congress and CPM cadre. Combine this with the Maoist problem, and conduct of peaceful polling in the state was never going to be easy," wrote the paper. "But the EC has yet again shown why it's a key institution for safeguarding democracy in the country."
